In 1978 the author was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. This novel was originally written in Yiddish, published, in installments, in the "Globus" literary magazine (January - September 1933) and book form in 1935. Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902 - 1991) lived in Poland up to the age of 33 and immigrated to the United States in 1935, settling in New York. The narrative technique resembles the medieval chronicles thus providing a much-needed distance from the grotesque, gruesome and heartbreaking main themes and topics. This book is based on actual historical events and reveals the fundamental psychological mechanisms that manifest among the members of a 17th-century religious sect. ![]()
